Hot !

I think today was the hottest day of the year in La Mirada. It was 102F at noon.

All day I sweated buckets, I am so glad we have AC.

After I picked Marvin up, we went home and I fell sleep.

Jennifer came over later to borrow a battery charger. She's already stressed out, 32  4year old kids in her class, and no aide. A little too much.

Tomorrow the girls will be here, we are super excited!

Cinnamon Crispies

I don't really like cinnamon, but tonight I wanted something sweet and I couldn't think of anything since I didn't really wanted to go to the store. I checked for simple recipes online, and my friend Ree, AKA The Pioneer Woman, had a very simple and easy recipe for cinnamon crispies.

All you need is flour tortillas, butter, sugar and cinnamon (I used just a little cinnamon)

Here's the recipe:

It's really good and kind of addictive, so I am not recommending it because it is chockful of calories. But it's yummy!

VMA Awards

Just finished watching the show. Some things I really enjoyed, but there were others that made me cringe a little.

The biggest failure was  Miley destroying one of my favorite songs, felt bad for Robin Thicke! Can she look any more trashy?

Also I thought Eminem was going to perform. Maybe he did when I went to the bathroom? if so, darn it I missed it!

I liked Justin Timberlake. Didn't care for Kanye and his electronic voice. Lady Gaga and her shell outfit made me gag-a! I liked  Macklemore and Ryan and Mary's performance of Same Love .

I think I may just go to sleep now. Hope you all had a nice weekend.

How smart are you?

Couldn't think what to write, so here's a little test for you.  Look for the answers tomorrow :)

Pffffffffffffffffffft

I checked the Courthouse online today, and wouldn't you know it, they found my ticket!

Unfortunately, I have to pay $495.00 plus $10.00 if I file online. According to the State of California, a California roll stop is considered the same as running a red light. Even though it says there's a penalty of $361.00 for a red light infraction in this town, they charged me $134.00 more, why? nobody knows!!! The sheriff department doesn't know either!

If I choose to go to traffic school there's an addtional $164.00 penalty! I guess I'll choose not to.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

A day in Court

I drove to the Courthouse, ticket in hand, ready to pay my fine.

The line was not unlike the lines at Disneyland, only more boring, not as happy and not as scenic.

About 5-6 lines with 20+ people in each line. 3  windows open .  Lines moved slowly, and then one window closed. Shortly after, another window closed. Moans from some people, hoots from others.

Another window opened, that was for people wanting an extension, not to pay fines. Many people moved there, some came back when they found out they couldn't pay the fine there. Duh!

I just read a note saying no cell phones allowed (I had been playing  Candy Crush for a couple of hours, oh well!). Finally it was my turn.

I explained I had tried to pay online but they couldn't find the citation, she clicked the computer and said, no, it's not here yet. I said the infraction was June 6, why isn't it here? She said maybe the officer forgot to send it, and gave me a "Proof of Appearance" paper and told me to keep on checking online, and if not there, to go back in a month. Say what?

Then I went to Porto's and bought myself lunch (a Medianoche sandwich) and a couple of goodies.

And so it goes :)

1st day of High School

It seems strange that Tristan is starting High School already! Time does fly!

I texted him to ask how the day went, and he said  it was OK, actually a little boring. I told him I hope things get more fun as it goes on  :)

The painters were here today, just power washing the house and stuff, so I decided to go see Jennifer at Jersey. She doesn't have any furniture yet. Since she has the little ones this year, pre Kinder, they are giving her new little tables and chairs. School starts in Little Lake August 28. Good luck!

I will let you know tomorrow how things go in  the Court House, I hope they don't make me go back Saturday (and yes Lizzie, they are open on Saturday!)

Love you all.

Very annoying!

I went to the sheriff's community office today, to ask for a parking exemption since tomorrow is street sweeping day and we have the painters over and no place to park.
They wrote the license numbers of the pickup and the Mustang, and supposedly they will not be ticketed.

The I asked about my traffic ticket, yes the one I got June 6. I go online diligently at least once a week and it keeps saying they cannot find it. I wanted to pay it and get it over with. It's even hard to see the date, and the infraction.

Their answer: My date to go to court is this Saturday, August 24. It doesn't matter if it shows as "not found". I told them that's the day I take my husband to dialysis, they said to ask for an extension, the problem is, they CANNOT FIND THE F%#@$ citation, therefore I cannot get the extension.

So they said to get somebody to drive him but I better get my A$$ to court, lest I get a warrant for my arrest, and a hefty fine on top of the regular fine.

I got so pissed off about it, that I had to come home and take half an anxiety pill, which put me to sleep for about 2 hours.

I'll go Thursday after I take Marvin, and then I will wait and wait and wait, and get frustrated and annoyed and probably I will cry too.

Why the hell they tell you to pay your tickets online to avoid going to the Court House and wait online? and then you cannot do it because they cannot find the citation.

Why why why!!!!

Nothing much...

...going on.

Tomorrow they will start prepping the house for painting. I think i already said it's going to match the shed, Cape Cod blue with white trimming. I hope it looks nice :)

I watched a movie yesterday called "Adore" or "Two Women" or "Perfect Mothers". It's an Australian French coproduction, and was shown this year at Sundance. It's based on a book by Doris Lessing called "The Grandmothers" (I didn't know she was a Nobel prize winner). In a nutshell, is the story of two women who have been best  friends since childhood, now each one has a teenage son that are good friends too. Then each woman has an affair with the other woman's son. There's lots more happening, but that's the premise.

The scenic views of the Australian beaches are gorgeous, and so are the sons. I enjoyed the movie.

An Illusion

Is hard to think of things to write every day. I am not sure why I decided to do so this month.

Anyway, for today all I have is a cool illusion.

You need to look at it from a PC, not an iphone. You also have to get out of your seat and walk away from your computer....

When you look at the picture, you will see Albert Einstein,
but if you walk back 15 feet, you'll see Marilyn Monroe.

cool, no?

Lizzie's visit

I like Saturdays when Lizzie comes to visit, because I can sleep late, since she takes Marvin to dialysis.

When she came back, we went to Cha Cha's for lunch. I ordered the same as always, fries -still great- calamari, flautas and a Margarita. We share a flan for dessert. She shared the appetizers with me and also has steak quesadilla and sangria. So we are good with Cha Cha for a few more weeks.

We stopped by Robert's house because he had an open house, and "admired" the interior. It sure was not staged! You would think at least they would have made up the beds and pick up clothes from the floor. On top of it, the carpet was really dirty. And they are asking $465,000 for it. Good luck!

She went to pick up Marvin and a little later we both went to Kohls and the grocery store. For dinner she went to Classic Burgers and had a cheeseburger and fries, Marvin had a breakfast (served all day) chicken fried steak with gravy and scrambled eggs. I didn't have anything other than a few fries from Lizzie, as I was not hungry.

I felt a little off, so I went to lay down for a while and fell sleep. Of course, now everybody went to sleep and I am wide awake :)

I hope Sandy and Marty had a good time in Wendover, and found the house all in one piece after they got back ;)

Elvis

36 years ago the King of Rock'n'Roll died at age 42.

He would have turned 78 years old today.

Home improvement in the neighborhood

It seems like a lot of neighbors want to improve their homes this month.

We are having "our" painter coming maybe next week. Most likely we will paint it to match the shed, blue with white trim.

Our neighbors Amy and Jose, will be painting theirs probably next week too. They chose  yellow with light brown trim. Their painter was supposed to give us an estimate bu he hasn't shown up yet, I jsut emailed him to tell him we got a painter already.

Robert, the neighbor across the street, and my main source of entertainment in the street, put his house up for sale. First by owner, then Century 21, and now some other realty. I asked him about it and he said most likely he will stay on?! In the meantime, he  just had his house painted. It's gray with white trimming. His next door neighbors, John and Evelyn are getting theirs painted too, by the same painter Robert used (he was way cheaper than all the others!).

And the neighbors in the other side of Robert, well we don't know. It seems the house has been sold, was in escrow, the termite people tented it, etc. But nobody has moved in yet, and there's no movement. We'll see.

Happy ANNIVERSARY!

Love you and wish you many many more happy years together :)

Candy Crush &*$#@

I have been stuck for days and days and days at level 52, with no signs of ever going to 53.

I have received many lives and a lot of stuff from friends. And I'm sorry but there's no way in hell I am going to "buy" any stuff from Zinga!!!

This is an addictive and frustrating game. And really I have no patience for it.

I can play the game in my iPhone, and I have no friends' gifts, but it seems a lot easier than doing it in the PC. Why is that?

BTW I have a friend that is in level 400+. Freaky!

Foot Spa

I finally made the appointment for the Foot Spa, and went by this afternoon.

I believe I got  good value for the money. In my previous post I wrote what it was and how much it cost. It was more reflexology that massage although there was some massage as well.

The place was very clean and comfortable. Lucy, a young chinese woman, was very efficient and knew what she was doing, and best of all, there was minimal talk! It was very relaxing and I fell sleep a couple of times during the foot massage (oh how I loved it!)

One part I wasn't too fond of was the back massage. She pressed points on my neck and shoulders and sort or rotated my arm and elbow. Then she kneed on my thighs. Even though she was a small young lady it still was a unexpected weight. She walked on her knees up my buttocks and settled again in the small of my back, from there she kneaded and rubbed and press on some points, then did my neck and my head. The head part was good.

All in all it was a good experience and I definitely might try it again.

A French Movie

Last night I watched a French movie I had never heard of before. It's a 2004 film called "Ils se marierent et eurent beaucoup d'enfants" translation: " They will marry and have many children."
In the US they translated it to "Happily Ever After". In French with English subtitles.

It is a very French movie and I enjoyed it (so much smoking). I know some of the stars, although they are not really well known in the US, but Johnny Depp has a small part in it.

The reason I am writing about it is I just love the soundtrack. I especially like a song the Charlotte and Depp listen to in a record store, the whole scene is very sensual and the music is great. I thought it was a french song but after doing some research it is a song by Radiohead called "Creep"

More songs from Radiohead , Velvet Underground (Lou Reed singing Sunday Morning) and Elvis.  Love them :)

Painting the house

As I wrote a few days ago, we are thinking of having the house exterior painted.

The first quote was just out of sight. A scam.

The next door neighbors are having the house painted as well, their painter was supposed to give us an estimate but he hasn't shown up yet, but I did call one that I saw in Facebook, and he came and he's a very nice person and Marvin and I both liked him, so I'll be giving him a call and see when he can get started.

His estimate was a little below  the neighbors' estimate, but what made it nice is because I told him I saw it in Facebook he gave us a 10% discount :)

This is the name in Facebook if you want to check him out: Paint it up

We just about decided to paint it the same color as the shed. Cape Cod blue with white trims. I think it will be quite a change, I hope we like it!  :)

Henry Poole

I just finished watching a movie I've been wanting to see for a long time, "Henry Poole Is Here" a 2008 movie filmed in La Mirada.

It's a quirky little movie, and I sort of liked it, although I spent most of my time trying to guess what streets and what houses were featured.
This is a review of the film http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1029120/
The users reviews are good as well.

I know of one area where it was filmed because is a couple of blocks from my house. I remember walking down the street with Tristan who was visiting , he was totally uninterested and sat down in the curve with a book while I was busy trying to figure out what was going on.

Here's some pictures I took that day.

Manicure

After leaving Marvin at dialysis, I stopped next door (Nails Spa) for a manicure.
I had been there once before and I wrote about it here in this blog.

All I know is I have trouble relaxing and enjoying being taken care of. It may be because of my mild case of ADD, but I find it hard to sit down doing nothing. I get really antsy.

I must add that I have no problem whatsoever sitting down for large amounts of time playing in the computer, but I can watch TV at the same time, I can get up and have a drink or a snack, and I can do so many different things in the computer that it keeps my mind busy.

The Vietnamese lady that did my nails had very poor English and I could hardly understand her. When I handed her the nail polish I had chosen, she became agitated and said NO no polish! she wanted me to have my nails ridges smooth out and buff my nails so they shone. I said OK. She said that $5.00 more dollars. Fine.

So here I am with really short squared nails, buffed to high shine and no polish. Next time she said she will shellack them. As if.

What's his name?

After a lot of thoughtful thinking I finally found out the name of Marvin's surgeon, rather, his regular doctor found it as per my request.

It was driving me and the girls crazy not to remember, they knew it was a somewhat different name. We all thought he didn't have a lot of people skills. I shudder remembering how we were told about the results of surgery, but I guess he did whatever it was possible given the circumstances and he must be a good surgeon because Marvin is doing well.

Just please Dr Tropea, it would be helpful to the patient's family if you were a little kinder.

What to eat?

I told you about my dry mouth and how Biotene has helped. But I still have trouble swallowing certain foods, especially meat. Another frustrating thing is  a lot of the foods I eat taste differently, and not in a good way.

That makes it much harder to think of meals to eat.

This was my meals for today: Breakfast was a chocolate croissant from Panera. Lunch was sweet potato fries with alioli, from G Burgers. Snack was some chips and dip. Dinner: 2 slices of pizza, and I had a few pieces of Tuscan melon for dessert. Oh and many many glasses of water (and Pepsi).

Not very well balanced meals. I like salads but the lettuce gets stuck in the roof of my mouth and won't go down :( . My doctor didn't see any infection or something wrong when he checked my mouth and throat.

It is getting better, so maybe it will just take time.

Dedicated to Lulu

(With Apologies to "The Sound of Music")

How do you solve a problem like Lulu?

Many a thing you know I'd like to tell her
Many a thing she ought to understand
But how do you make her behave
And listen to all you say
How do you keep her from "going" in the rug?

But I'd like to say a word in her behalf
Lulu makes me laugh :)

She's a darling, she's a headache
and she's mine!

Movie Sunday

Today was a quiet day. I did absolutely nothing other than watching a couple of movies.

Marvin left in the morning to get breakfast, and later he went shopping for groceries. He also went to have the SSR and the pickup washed.

I watched 2 movies. One was "The Big Wedding" it has a great cast (DeNiro, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, etc.) but it was not a good or funny movie. Disappointing.

The other movie was called "Letting Go" (2012). Is one of those Indie type movies.  I was not familiar with the actors. That's what the review said:
Letting Go is a warm, entertaining, funny and thought provoking film filled with interesting characters and three scene stealing dogs.

I hope you all had a good Sunday.

Happy Feet 2

A couple of days ago I went shopping for groceries at Stater Brothers and a cute Asian guy came and handed me a leaflet. I looked at it . It was for the "Grand Opening" of La Mirada Foot Spa, located conveniently in the same  lot as Stater Brothers.

An introductory $5.00 off coupon was attached to the card.

I decided to give it a try. I will go on Monday. That's what you get for $25.00 minus the $5.00 coupon:

15 minutes head, neck, shoulder, arms and hand massage.
30 minutes foot massage.
15 minutes back massage.

That seems perfect for me, since I cannot sit still for a whole hour, this way is divided in 15 minutes massages, but for the 30 minutes foot massage, which I could handle, because I love having my feet massaged.

I will let you know how it goes :)

Happy Feet

Ever since my 30's, I never wore sandals that showed my toes, they were gross looking, and I never wore nail polish. I think the reason is  I wore high heels when I was in my  teens and early 20's. Stilettos at times, and it screwed up my feet. Then when living in Idaho, I had the car accident and shattered my left ankle, that also contributed to my foot looking weird.

I started going to the podiatrist last year and he was really helpful and told me what to do to keep my feet/toenails looking better.

I went to the podiatrist today. My feet look and feel smooth and refreshed. Like a baby's really!  My podiatrist recommended AQUAPHOR ointment for cracked heels, and of course Ben Gay for nail fungus (it worked).

Here's a picture. You may not think much of it, my toes are still stubby looking but my nails are awesome. I'm ready for some nail polish :)

Buyer Beware

We have been talking for a while about having the exterior of the house painted. Talking to Amy, our next door neighbor, she told me they were painting their house too, and at my request, gave me the card of the painter so he could give us an estimate. The estimate for her house was $2700.00.

Then the other day I got a call from a woman that said we had been referred by somebody in the neighborhood and they could come and give us an estimate. She said it was a company in La Mirada, called Family Builders, and we may have seen their trucks? So we  made an appointment for Wednesday.

He showed up and checked the house, and wrote stuff down, and asked exactly what we wanted...etc. He (Shawn) was very personable, spoke with an accent..Marvin asked him where he was from, he said..guess. Marvin said Middle East, I said Jordan? he said he was not a Muslim, Marvin guessed Israel, he said yes.

Anyway he kept on talking, getting personal asking how long we'd been married, showed us a picture of his son, said his wife was pregnant with a girl, etc. He also offered to bring some falafel and hummus next time (if we hired him/his company).

I asked him where was he located in La Mirada, he said the home office was in Riverside, and offices in Ontario, etc.  The company was called Dream Builders. And he started showing us papers of  insurance, California license, etc. I was annoyed because that didn't match what I was told on the phone.

Anyway since he was here I thought it wouldn't hurt to see his estimate. So he  wrote down everything they were going to do, like patch the cracks (he said quacks instead all the time and it made me giggle silently), sand blast, cover the windows, fix the wooden sills, etc. It would take about 10-12 days, with 5 or 6 men working!? I kept on asking what was the estimate. With much fanfare, he wrote down a number and showed it to us:

                                   $ 16,950.00

Marvin and I were speechless. I said no way. That was way more than what we were planning on spending which was around $3000.00. He smirked and said theirs was quality work. I said well thanks for your time and got up. But he wouldn't take no for an answer. He made a big deal out of calling his boss, and gave us 20% off. He stayed almost an hour trying to get us to sign in. I already had made up my mind that the whole thing seemed like a scam so I kept on saying no, no way, goodbye.

Finally after much writing, calling his "boss" etc etc. He said he would do not only the exterior painting, but also stain the wooden posts in the patio, paint the ramp, put gutters, etc. etc. His lowest price then was $9750.00. Marvin perked up a little but I said NO right away. He wanted  me to talk to Marvin and told me he (Marvin) seemed happy with the price and I was denying him the happiness of having the house painted. WTF!

He went outside while Marvin and I talked. I didn't want to, but  it seemed the only way he would ever leave. Marvin was wavering a little but I said no way. I mean the last amount was almost half of the original amount and on top of it he was adding all that extra stuff. Really?

So I went outside and told him, sorry the answer is still no, he kept on trying, saying we could put  just $500.00 down and $50.00 a month for like 20 years. I said no again and again and I was getting extremely annoyed. So finally he left but was not happy at all.

So that's the story. By the way, there is such a company, I checked reviews in Yelp, and other people had bad experiences with them too. Some even said they preyed on seniors. Pfffffffffffffffffffffffffft!

End of July recap

Time seems to fly by...we are already in August.

Highlights of the month:

Tristan came to visit us for a few days. I had fun going with him to Huntington Beach and meeting his friend Ruben. I hope he enjoyed himself.

Had to take Marvin to the doctor for a very painful pulled ligament. He seems to be feeling better now.

Lizzie came over for the weekend of the 20th. Always good to see her :)

I ended the month by having my anual physical. I am glad to report everything is fine. My dry mouth is better and I can swallow again :)

Books I read this month:

Wendy Miller - Three Good Things
Deirdre Martin - Kiss the Bride
Tim Tharp - The Spectacular Now
Susan Mallery - Barefoot Season
Susan McBride - The Truth about Love and Lightning
Allie Larkin - Why Can't I Be You
Lori Wilde - The Welcome Home Garden Club

I will start reading the book recommended by Mia.

Here's to a great August!
