Back to the USA _ Costa Brava ( Picture heavy)

Sunday, Sept. 20 – We started the day by having breakfast on the patio.
It was our last day in the Carrer Beltran apartment, we had spent some really unforgettable days in Barcelona but we were excited about going to Platja D’Aro.
Sonia came to pick us up and after cleaning the apartment and getting the entire luggage ready; we were on our way to the Costa Brava!
We stopped first in Santa Cristina de Aro to Sonia and Eric’s apartment. She had fixed lunch for us, Catalan salad, canalones and tarta de Santiago. All very good.
the apartment is small but very nice, and she wishes she had a little garden area but they have a small balcony and a nice view of the mountains.

On the way to Platja, we stopped at the Cemetery where my mom and dad are buried.
We said a little prayer and went on to see what apartment we finally got!
We rented the apartment in Platja through Airbnb, but there had been a couple of changes, and we were not too sure what we would be getting. Luckily for us it was a nicely remodeled apartment on the grounds of Hotel Aromar. It was called Delfin Apartment, right by the sea; it was in the 3rd floor. But the greatest thing about it was the wonderful view we had.
There was a lovely terrace all around the apartment, and a table with chairs where we spent a lot of time just enjoying the view. I have never seen a bluer blue than the water that first day. We had wonderful weather while we were in Platja! We all got our feet wet the first day.

At night we went to a bar called Costa Brava and had some tapas and watched the European basketball finals, Spain won over Lithuania.

Monday, Sept 21 -The next morning we woke up early to watch the sunrise. It was gorgeous, right in front of us. We truly enjoyed it.
After breakfast, Sonia came to pick us up and we drove to San Feliu, and S’Agaro on our way to Restaurant Rosamar in Canyelles. This restaurant was located on a bluff overlooking the sea and rocks, it was gorgeous

Eric and Nicole were already there. We had a nice lunch –I had filet of sole with almond sauce- but there were lots of bees (we were told in September the bees are out in force) and Nicole freaked out big time and kept on getting up and running away from them, un til Eric got really upset with her and she settled down a little.

Later on we went back to Platja, and waited for my sister and Monica and her daughters to come from San Feliu. I had talked to Nuri earlier in the day and she was a little upset that she couldn’t meet me earlier but we already had the reservation for Rosamar.
Around 7PM they showed up. I went to meet Nuri and we hugged,
she didn’t look so well as she had been pretty sick with hepatitis 3 and was under medication. She gave me a rolled painting that had been in my parent’s house for many years. It depicts my mother, sister and me, when I was about a year old. I was happy to have it even though it needs heavy restoration; I’m looking into it now.
The 4 cousins
After talking for a while and saying hello to Monica and Aida and Irina, I invited them all for dinner in a restaurant right by the seaside named Pijaume close to the apartment.
We all had a good time and exchanged stories and took pictures. We would meet again the next day in San Feliu.
Singing with Nuri

Tuesday, Sept. 22 – We awoke to the sound of the French and Belgian people that were having a petanca tournament.
My foot was hurting so I went with the girls to the doctor to have it lanced and bandaged. They were super nice and I had a nice talk with them in catalan of course, about the coming elections. After that we walked around
My mother's apartment
Platja D'Aro
and bought a couple of things for the “boys” at home, then I went to sit down by the terrace and rested while the girls and Sonia went to get some lunch.

In the afternoon, Sonia drove us to San Feliu to Monica’s house. I sat down on the couch and prepared to listen to Nuri’s stories. Monica and the girls went for a walk around San Feliu; they took Willy the dog with them.
Willy dancing
Nuri talked and talked and talked, she’s mad with Sonia and Eric, too long a story to repeat here. She sort of apologized in a round about way about not sharing the money she got for our mom’s apartment, but I didn’t bring anything up and just let it go, just let bygones be bygones. She has a nice apartment in La Bisbal that she bought after she sold her apartment where she had her beauty salon, but she survives with social security which comes to be around $640 a month. Is a good thing all her doctors and medicines are free.
After a long visit –she hardly asked anything about my life or how I was doing, although she asked about Marvin- but that’s here, very self centered, she has not changed.
Saying goodbye to Nuri
Sonia and Eric came to pick us up and we went to see Eric’s mother, she also lives in San Feliu. I wanted to thank her for letting us use her car for all our displacements. She’s a very nice person, and we are Facebook friends.
After that, we went to Sonia’s house where Eric had fixed dinner for us. He’s a good cook and we had breaded pork, butifarra amb munxetes, jamon, sangria, pa am tomaquet and pebrots. It was a good time.
Tomorrow we will be going back to Barcelona.

Back to the USA -continuation-

Thursday, Sept. 17 – Went to the pharmacy and then to Farga to get some breakfast. We had a lunch date with my cousin Ferran at 12:30PM. When it was time we took the metro to Catalunya.

We walked down the Ramblas to Carrer Quintana and arrived there on time, after waiting a few minutes I went inside to find out about the reservation. I was told the Restaurant didn’t open for lunch until 1:30 and that our reservation was for 2:30! I misheard dos for doce!!! So  we decided to go for a walk, get some churros and look around the Cathedral again.
As we still had about an hour left, we took a taxi to the church of Santa Maria del Mar in El Born.
We took some pictures and then walked to Museo Picasso that was nearby. We spent some time in the gift shop and then we walked back to the Restaurant.
Can Culleretes is the oldest Restaurant in Barcelona est.1786. My cousin Ferran was waiting for us with a nice bouquet of flowers. It was nice to see him again.

We had a nice lunch, for me canalones, calamares a la romana and tarta al whisky.

After talking and remembering and enjoying the dinner, we went back to the apartment. I had a huge blister in my left foot and it was hurting.
We had a nice dinner at home of bocadillos de jamon y chorizo.

Friday, Sept. 18 – Girls went to Montserrat.

I stayed home to rest, my blister wad hurting. I was out of euros so I decided to go to La Caixa and change some dollars. Unfortunately they wouldn’t exchange unless I had an account. With only a few coins, I took the Metro to Catalunya and looked for a place to exchange my dollars. Because euros are the most common currency in Europe, there are not too many exchange places as there used to be, but I found one in the Ramblas.
With money in my pocket I went to a Granja to have some horchata and a bikini of sobrasada and cheese. After that I went to El Corte Ingles and walked around Plaza Catalunya,
                                                                      and then I went home.
The girls had a nice time in Montserrat and enjoyed the trip.
At night we went for a walk to a nice park -Jardins de la Tamarita- they had discovered in Avinguda Tibidabo
We had a late dinner at Restaurant Molina, close to where we were staying.

Saturday, Sept. 19 – Eric’s daughter Melanie, is a guide in the Barcelona Touristic Bus and gave us 3 free tickets. So sweet.  It was another beautiful day.

We took the bus and did all the different routes…Red, Green, Red, Blue. That was a great way to see all of Barcelona from the open top double decker bus. At the Green bus we stopped for lunch at the Passeig Maritim. It was one of the best lunches I had, in a really nice Restaurant El Cangrejo Loco, located right by the sea.

I had  gazpacho, calamares, monkfish fisherman’s style and crema catalana.

After lunch we took the bus again (it was a hop – off style tour) and continued the trip.
When the buds left us at Avinguda Tibidabo, we took the blue tram and the funicular and went up  to Tibidabo.
Amazing views of Barcelona
, lots of people, churros, even a few weddings. And a beautiful sunset behind the mountains.

A very busy but very beautiful day.
Tomorrow to Platja D’Aro.

Back to the USA (long post)

We got back Monday from our wonderful trip back to my homeland. I had not been in Barcelona for 15 years, and it was great to be there again with my two daughters, it made it so much more special.  Thanks Marvin for making it all possible J

I will write a few days at a time. Just some highlights.  Another day I will write about the next days, and so on.. And lastly I will write about my thoughts and impressions of the trip.

And of course I will add some pictures too.

Sunday, Sept 13 – Marvin drove us to LAX, our plane was leaving to Atlanta GA at 9:30AM. It took over 4 hours to get there and we had to hurry to get our connecting flight to Barcelona that was leaving at 5:39PM.

Monday, September 14 – After a 10+ hour flight we arrived in Barcelona

Sonia and Eric were waiting for us and drove us to our first apartment in Carrer Bertran 156, very close to the street were I used to live.

Hurrying to get to the door, I fell on the steps and hurt my knees. Way to go!
After checking things out we walked to the house where I used to live,
and after that we went to a bar called El Rincon and had some tapas and beer. It’s good to be back.

Tuesday, September 15 – The girls and I took the Metro and went downtown. Our goal was to have hot chocolate and churros for breakfast, and so we did.

After that, we walked and walked and walked (6 ½ miles). We went down the Ramblas, to Columbus Statue, to the big market La Boqueria, to Plaza Real where we sat in an outdoor tapas place that was not the best choice L but we saw some dancing Brazilians that were eye candy.

We had an unexpected bonus: at the Virreina palace we saw some of the “Giants” that would be in the Merced parade. It was fun.

We also stopped to what became a favorite place, Els 4 Gats.

That night we went to El Pescadito in carrer Balmes and had dinner (monkfish for me).

Wednesday, September 16 – Another walking day. We walked all over the Gothic Quarter, Cathedral, Plaza del Rey, Beautiful.

We went back to Els 4 Gats to have some tapas that were very good: croquetas, pa amb tomaquet and patatas bravas. Yum.
Later that day Sonia and Eric came by with Nicole. I had never met her in person; she’s a 13 year old typical teenager. We all went to visit Sonia’s father Jordi, Nuri’s ex husband. He’s been pretty sick for the last couple of years but he was excited to see us. I’ve known him since we went to school together; it was nice to see him and his wife Elvira.
After that we drove to la Barceloneta to meet Eric’s 2 older daughters Katia and Melanie. We had a before dinner drink at Juanita Lala
and then we went to Els 3 Nusos Restaurant. I had some wonderful anchovies from La Escala, and codfish in orange sauce with red onion and pine nuts. Good food, good company!

Counting down!

Just a couple more days to go and we'll be on our way to Barcelona. I am beyond excited!

I read Sandy's blog about packing. I am not the world's best packer, I tend to throw things in, then unpack and purge and try again. About 2 weeks ago I packed really well, I was happy, everything fit perfectly, but then I kept adding and emptying everything, etc etc. and now I am back to square one.

It's been a long time (15 years) since I've been to Barcelona, and it'll be quite different from other times, mainly because it will be me and the girls only, and I have no family left in the city, other than a couple of cousins, so  we had to rent apartments, and we'll have to eat out all the time. The apartments have full equipped kitchen but I am pretty sure I won't be cooking!

I was going to take a taxi from the airport to the apartment but my niece Sonia insisted on picking us up. We'll be going to Platja D'Aro on Sunday and she says she'll come to pick us up again. My sister Nuri is pretty sick, Sonia told me she's  taking heavy medication and is not in a good frame of mind. I feel bad for her, and I hope we will have a good meeting.  It'll be nice to be in Platja in an apartment by the beach, I hope it works OK because we had some problems with the rental, since the first one was not available, the second one didn't have enough beds, and finally this 3rd one might be just right!

Tomorrow a home care aide will come to be trained on taking care of M. I hope it works well, also a Kaiser nurse will be visiting a couple of times a week. And of course  his brother and sister will come and keep him company :)

Also tomorrow night Lizzie will come over and Saturday we'll pick up Sandy at the airport.  On Sunday, if Marv feels OK he will drive us to the airport.

So I still have a ton of things to do, main one is to finish packing. I think I have decided on what to take and most everything will be black and white, so it'll be easy to combine. 2 pairs white pants, 2 pairs black pants, 1 skort, and about 6 tops. 2 walking shoes, 1 "dress" shoes, and a hoodie. All very casual. Maybe I'll take a picture tomorrow and add it to this post.

I'm taking a notebook so I can write about what we do when we are in Barcelona, so I can write about it in this blog when we get back.

I know I will miss Marv and Lulu, but I also know I need to go back to my hometown again. I've missed it as well!

August has been an OK month. Very busy trying to get everything to get everything arranged for our trip. We didn't do much other than going out for dinner/lunch a few times. And I did some shopping :)
